  • Myanmar's junta chief Min Aung Hlaing is formally elected president under a military-drafted constitution, with Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin among the first to offer congratulations.
  • West Bank settler violence surges, with two Palestinian brothers shot dead and 10 others wounded in separate attacks near Nablus; settler violence has killed more than 1,140 Palestinians since October 2023.

1. Middle East: US-Israel War on Iran

The US-Israel military campaign against Iran entered its 38th day on 6 April 2026, with President Donald Trump setting a Tuesday 8 p.m. ET (midnight GMT Wednesday) deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face destruction of all power plants and bridges across the country. "Every bridge in Iran will be decimated by 12 o'clock tomorrow night," Trump said, adding that "the entire country can be taken out in one night." AP

Iran rejected a 45-day ceasefire proposal brokered by Egyptian, Pakistani and Turkish mediators, instead conveying a 10-point plan demanding a permanent end to the war with guarantees against future attacks. "We only accept an end of the war with guarantees that we won't be attacked again," said Mojtaba Ferdousi Pour, head of Iran's diplomatic mission in Cairo. AP; PBS NewsHour

Airstrikes killed at least 29 people across Iran on 6 April, including six children under the age of 10 in a residential area of Tehran's Baharestan county, according to Iranian media. A US-Israeli strike near Sharif University of Technology damaged a fuel station and caused damage to the university's mosque. Al Jazeera

Israel struck a key petrochemical plant in the South Pars natural gas field — the world's largest, shared with Qatar — and killed the head of intelligence for Iran's Revolutionary Guard, Maj. Gen. Majid Khademi. Israel also struck three Tehran airports overnight, hitting dozens of aircraft belonging to the Iranian Air Force. AP

More than 1,900 people have been killed in Iran since the war began on 28 February 2026. Iran has kept the Strait of Hormuz closed to US and Israeli vessels, causing the largest disruption to global energy flows in modern history. Al Jazeera

The UN condemned any targeting of civilian infrastructure. "Any attack on civilian infrastructure is a violation of international law and a very clear one," UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told journalists. AP

2. Gaza and the West Bank

An Israeli airstrike killed at least 10 Palestinians near a school housing displaced people in central Gaza on 6 April, with several others wounded. The strike occurred near the Yarmouk Stadium area in Gaza City. Al Jazeera

The cumulative death toll from the Israeli offensive in Gaza since October 2023 has risen to 72,302 killed and 172,090 wounded, according to the Gaza Health Ministry — the majority of them civilians, women and children. Anadolu Agency

Since the October 2025 ceasefire agreement came into effect, more than 720 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks, with Palestinian groups reported to have violated the ceasefire 139 times in total, including 22 times since the start of the Iran war. The Cradle; FDD

Humanitarian conditions remain dire. UNICEF and its partners restored access to clean water in southern Gaza after an airstrike on 25 March damaged the Southern Gaza Seawater Desalination Plant, cutting output to less than 20 per cent of capacity and leaving half a million people without adequate drinking water. OCHA

A flotilla organised by Greenpeace and international civil society groups is set to sail from Barcelona on 12 April in solidarity with Gaza, with planned stops in Syracuse, Italy, before heading to the coast. Greenpeace

West Bank

Israeli settler violence surged across the occupied West Bank on 6 April. Two Palestinian brothers were shot dead by settlers, and 10 others were wounded in separate attacks near Nablus. Settlers attacked a Bedouin community north of the village of Lubban, assaulting residents, burning approximately 10 vehicles and two homes. In a separate incident, settlers entered the town of Qusra and set fire to a Palestinian vehicle. Anadolu Agency

Since October 2023, settler violence has killed more than 1,140 Palestinians in the West Bank and injured approximately 11,750 others, with nearly 22,000 arrested. In the first three months of 2026 alone, settler violence displaced 685 Palestinian children — more than 10 times the rate recorded in the same period of the previous year. Anadolu Agency

3. Lebanon

Israel's military campaign in Lebanon continued on 6 April, with at least 36 people killed and 209 others injured in Israeli airstrikes in the preceding 24 hours, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry. The cumulative death toll from Israeli attacks in Lebanon since the start of the war has risen to nearly 1,500, including 129 children, with over 4,400 injured. Anadolu Agency

More than 1.1 million people — nearly one in five Lebanese — are now displaced. More than 137,000 people, one third of whom are children, are sheltering in nearly 700 collective sites, many of them schools. OCHA

Humanitarian partners have distributed more than 3 million meals and over 65,000 food parcels since the escalation began. UNICEF has supplied more than 280,000 litres of fuel to pumping stations nationwide. However, only a third of the Flash Appeal — which requires $308.3 million to cover the March–May period — has been funded, with less than $100 million received. OCHA

Hezbollah claimed to have launched anti-ship cruise missiles at an Israeli warship located 68 nautical miles off the coast of Lebanon on 5 April. Israeli drones continued to target villages in southern Lebanon, including Kfar Rumman. ISW

4. Russia-Ukraine War

Russia-Ukraine peace talks are currently on pause as US attention has shifted to the war with Iran, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on 6 April. "The Americans have a lot of other things to deal with," Peskov told media, adding that it was difficult to organise talks in a trilateral format. Kyiv Independent (Ukr)

US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are expected to visit Kyiv after Orthodox Easter (12 April) to continue peace talks. The last trilateral session involving Russia took place in Geneva in February 2026. Ukraine's Presidential Office has said security guarantees from the US remain a central demand, though the Trump administration has stated it cannot offer such guarantees until the war ends. Kyiv Independent (Ukr)

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated his proposal for a mutual ceasefire on striking energy infrastructure, saying he stands by the offer. Ukraine and several European allies are drafting a short ceasefire proposal. Al Jazeera

On the battlefield, Ukraine has regained control of 480 sq km of territory and 12 settlements in southeastern and eastern Ukraine since late January, according to Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi. Ukraine also outshoots Russia in cross-border drone warfare for the first time in March 2026, according to military analysts. Kyiv Independent (Ukr)

Ukraine has intensified long-range strikes on Russian oil infrastructure over the past two weeks, targeting the Sheskharis oil terminal and the Novorossiysk port. Russia launched nearly 1,000 drones and missiles at Ukraine in March, killing at least seven people and wounding dozens. ISW

A Russian attack on Odesa killed three civilians, including a child, and injured over a dozen others, damaging homes, a kindergarten and a local substation. A drone strike on a market in Nikopol killed at least five civilians and injured 25 others. UN News

Weekend attacks across Ukraine killed 42 people, including a child, and injured nearly 200 civilians, according to OCHA. More than 25,000 people have been displaced from the Donetsk region so far in 2026. OCHA

Western but nuanced perspective: Analysts at Russia Matters note that the Iran war has diverted US attention and military resources from Ukraine, with Fareed Zakaria arguing that "the obvious winner is Russia" as oil revenues rise and sanctions are eased. However, Sergey Radchenko counters that the war exposes Russia's "weakness and growing irrelevance" as Moscow is unable to help Iran and is reduced to "the role of an onlooker." Russia Matters

5. Sudan

Sudan's civil war is approaching its third year (15 April 2026 marks the anniversary), with humanitarian needs described as "skyrocketing" and the 2026 Humanitarian Response Plan funded at just 16 per cent — $465 million of the $2.9 billion required. UN News

A drone strike on Al Jabalayn Teaching Hospital in White Nile State on 2 April killed 10 health workers and injured 22 others, including the medical director, severely disrupting health services. Since the conflict began, the World Health Organization has verified more than 200 attacks on healthcare facilities, with over 2,000 people killed. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, 13 attacks killed 184 people and injured nearly 300 others. OCHA

A drone attack on a market in Balila village, Blue Nile State, killed seven civilians. More than 10,000 people were displaced from the Kurmuk locality between mid-February and late March, many crossing into Ethiopia. More than 1.6 million people have returned to Khartoum despite explosive remnants of war and damaged infrastructure. OCHA

The UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, Pekka Haavisto, is conducting a regional tour, meeting stakeholders in Nairobi and Cairo to explore avenues for de-escalation. The Sudan Humanitarian Fund has allocated nearly $200 million to deliver life-saving assistance to 4 million people. UN News

6. Afghanistan-Pakistan Border Conflict

Cross-border shelling, airstrikes and armed clashes along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border have resulted in civilian casualties in the several hundred — including children and one humanitarian worker — since hostilities escalated in late February 2026. Over 94,000 people (approximately 13,400 families) have been displaced across Khost, Kunar, Nangarhar, Paktia and Paktika provinces. OCHA/ReliefWeb

Twenty-five health facilities and 41 schools have been damaged, closed or suspended due to shelling and insecurity. A major airstrike on 17 March destroyed the Omid Addiction Treatment Hospital in Kabul. At least 345 homes have been destroyed or severely damaged. OCHA/ReliefWeb

Humanitarian access to approximately 100,000 people in Nuristan Province has been impossible since late February. One INGO worker and her son were killed by cross-border fire on 18 March while travelling on the only access road. The Torkham border crossing reopened briefly on 26 March, enabling the return of 339 Afghans before closing again. OCHA/ReliefWeb

Pakistan has asked the Taliban to declare the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) a terrorist organisation and dismantle its network to ease border tensions, according to Pakistani officials. Times of India

7. Myanmar

Myanmar's junta-controlled parliament formally elected General Min Aung Hlaing as president on 3 April 2026, under a military-drafted constitution. The move is widely viewed as the institutionalisation of military rule behind a civilian facade rather than a democratic transition. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin were among the first world leaders to offer congratulations. DW

A criminal case against Min Aung Hlaing was filed in Indonesia on 6 April by a group of civil society organisations and Rohingya representatives, alleging genocide. The case marks a new legal challenge for the newly installed president. DW

Conflict continues across southeastern Myanmar. In Mon State, Karen State and Tanintharyi Region, at least 8 people were killed and 17 injured in the past week, with 14 arrested amid ongoing clashes between junta forces and resistance groups. Rehmonnya

8. Haiti

Armed gang violence in Port-au-Prince continues to cause severe harm to civilians, cutting people off from lifesaving services. ReliefWeb reports that escalating violence in urban areas is resulting in high levels of death and injury among the population caught in the crossfire. ReliefWeb

Children now make up approximately half of Haiti's gang membership, according to CNN, as gangs recruit hungry and homeless children with food and shelter. The Dominican Republic has convened its National Security and Defence Council in response to the escalating crisis. Haiti Libre

In the first quarter of 2026, 9,000 people were displaced by armed violence in Artibonite, and $10.5 million in humanitarian support has been mobilised in the region. ReliefWeb

9. Somalia

Somalia faces multiple overlapping crises in 2026, including prolonged drought, repeated failed rainy seasons, and ongoing conflict. More than 1.8 million children are expected to suffer acute malnutrition this year. Rising fuel prices driven by the Middle East war have driven up transport costs for humanitarian operations, according to Médecins Sans Frontières. MSF

Approximately 6.5 million people in Somalia are experiencing acute food insecurity, with geopolitical conflicts over the country's strategic location and maritime corridors intensifying the internal humanitarian crisis. MSF

10. International Cooperation and Peacekeeping

The UN Secretary-General's UN80 Initiative has entered its "delivery phase," with 86 actions under the UN80 Action Plan to strengthen how the UN system delivers across peace and security, development and human rights. The initiative is part of broader UN reform efforts ahead of the organisation's 80th anniversary. UN News

6 April marked the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, with the 2026 theme "Sport: Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers," focusing on equality and inclusion. The day was observed against a backdrop of multiple active conflicts worldwide. ANERA

A new report from the International Water Management Institute warns that the world faces a $200 billion annual shortfall in water investment, with water receiving less than 10 per cent of global climate finance despite being the top priority for climate adaptation. A quarter of the global population currently lacks safe drinking water. UN News

Ukraine and Syria agreed to cooperate on security and exchange military experience, Ukrainian President Zelensky announced following a trip to Damascus. Al Jazeera
