Summary:

  • The US–Israel war on Iran enters a critical diplomatic juncture: President Trump postponed a planned military strike after Gulf leaders intervened, while Iran submitted a revised peace proposal via Pakistan. Negotiations remain fragile.
  • Gaza continues to suffer under intensified Israeli military operations, with the total death toll surpassing 73,000 since October 2023. Israel has intercepted the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters off Cyprus.

Middle East

Gaza & Palestine

Israeli military operations in Gaza have intensified since the October 2025 ceasefire collapsed. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, the total death toll has surpassed 73,000 Palestinians killed since 7 October 2023, with more than 76,000 injured. Since the October 2025 ceasefire, at least 850 Palestinians have been killed and more than 2,342 injured by continuing Israeli attacks. Al Jazeera

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his cabinet that Israel now controls 60 per cent of the Gaza Strip. Al Jazeera A Gaza-bound humanitarian aid flotilla — the Global Sumud Flotilla, comprising more than 50 vessels — was intercepted by Israeli naval forces in international waters off Cyprus on 18 May. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers burned land near Hebron under the protection of Israeli forces on 18 May. According to OCHA, between 7 October 2023 and 3 May 2026, 1,091 Palestinians — at least 239 of them children — were killed in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem. The UN and humanitarian partners are supporting kitchens serving one million meals a day in Gaza — down from 1.8 million daily meals in February 2026. Starvation deaths are being recorded, with 15 people, including four children, reported dead from starvation in the past 24 hours. 9News

Iran–US–Israel War

The United States and Israel launched a surprise military attack on Iran on 28 February 2026, targeting Iranian missiles, air defences, and military infrastructure. The conflict has since spread to neighbouring countries and rocked global energy markets, with the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed to international shipping. The New York Times

As of 18 May, a fragile ceasefire remains in place, but peace negotiations are stalled. President Trump revealed he had planned a major military strike on Iran for Tuesday 19 May but postponed it after direct requests from the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE, who indicated they were close to finalising a diplomatic deal. Iran submitted a revised peace proposal via mediator Pakistan on 18 May. Al Jazeera Iranian state media reported the US agreed to waive oil sanctions during the talks. CNBC

Iran's military commander warned the US and allies against any "strategic miscalculation," stating that Iran's armed forces are more prepared than ever. Thousands of civilians have been killed across the Middle East since the start of the war. Time

Lebanon

Israel launched fresh strikes on southern Lebanon on 17–18 May, killing at least six people including three paramedics, one day after a ceasefire extension was agreed. Lebanon's National News Agency reported a "double-tap" strike on a vehicle. UNICEF reports at least 59 children in Lebanon have been killed since the conflict escalated. Al Jazeera; Democracy Now!

Ukraine–Russia War

Ukraine launched its largest drone assault on Moscow and Russian territory over the weekend of 17–18 May, deploying more than 1,300 drones across 15 Russian regions and striking oil refineries and infrastructure. Ukrainian forces breached Moscow's heavy air defences. Politico; AP

Russia responded with a massive overnight barrage of 524 drones and 22 missiles targeting Ukraine on 18–19 May. The Independent Russia also struck a Chinese cargo ship off Ukraine before a Putin–Xi summit, drawing international condemnation. A Russian drone attack in Kyiv on 14 May killed at least 24 people, one of the deadliest attacks on the capital since the war began. Democracy Now!

Peace talks remain stalled. The Kremlin stated on 18 May that it expects negotiations to resume, following remarks by President Trump that a deadly Russian attack was a setback for diplomacy. Ukraine has proposed a ceasefire starting 6 May, but Russia has not responded positively. NBC News

According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russian forces saw a net loss of 45 square miles of Ukrainian territory in the four-week period of 14 April–12 May 2026. Russia currently controls approximately 29,112 square miles (12% of Ukraine) since the full-scale invasion began. Russia Matters

OHCHR's April 2026 report documents 238 civilians killed and 1,404 injured in Ukraine in April alone — the highest monthly toll since July 2025. Since 24 February 2022, OHCHR has verified a total of 15,850 civilians killed and 44,809 injured in Ukraine. The vast majority (96%) of casualties occurred in government-controlled territory. Sudan

Sudan's civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues with devastating humanitarian consequences. Drone strikes are now the leading cause of civilian deaths, accounting for more than 80 per cent of civilian fatalities in the first four months of 2026. The UN Human Rights Office documented at least 880 civilian deaths from drone strikes between January and April 2026. The New York Times; Eurasia Review

The Sudanese army captured a key town near the Ethiopian border from RSF forces on 16 May. Al Jazeera The overall death toll since April 2023 is estimated at over 400,000. Sudan faces the world's largest displacement crisis, with more than 14 million people displaced. Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

Human Rights Watch documented that M23 rebels and Rwandan military forces carried out an abusive month-long occupation of the eastern DRC city of Uvira, committing atrocities against civilians. Human Rights Watch M23 forces have also been demanding taxes on aid workers' salaries, putting further pressure on humanitarian operations. The New Humanitarian

M23 rebels have withdrawn from some strategic positions in South Kivu amid pressure from the US and international community. The DRC government and M23 agreed in principle to allow easier delivery of humanitarian aid. Critical Threats

South Sudan

Political tensions are rising in South Sudan, putting pressure on the fragile 2018 peace agreement. The US State Department announced targeted visa restrictions on South Sudanese officials accused of undermining the peace deal and engaging in corruption that has fuelled the conflict. The UN and partners are on the ground in Akobo town providing aid as families return following a period of conflict. Humanitarian access remains a critical concern, with aid supplies confiscated and aid workers detained across Upper Nile and other regions. ReliefWeb

Myanmar

Myanmar's civil war continues with resistance forces launching defensive attacks against junta military columns in Moebye, Pekhon Township on 18 May. The junta's credibility and legitimacy crisis deepens as Malaysia, as ASEAN chair, called for an end to the civil war and rejected the military junta's planned elections. The war has displaced millions, divided the country into military- and non-military-controlled areas, and gutted the economy and healthcare system. The conflict is also driving a drugs epidemic in northern Thailand, with hundreds of thousands of people becoming collateral damage. AFP

International Cooperation & Peacekeeping

The United States pledged an additional $1.8 billion in humanitarian funding to OCHA's Humanitarian Reset on 14 May 2026, which the UN welcomed as enabling expanded emergency relief operations reaching millions of people in need. UN News

The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet on Ukraine on 19 May. The African Union and United Nations held their 10th annual conference, expressing deep concern over the multiplication of global and continental challenges including armed conflicts and humanitarian crises. UN Security Council

The World Urban Forum opened in Baku on 19 May, with housing, safe cities, and resilient communities as central themes. The UN Secretary-General participated in events in Tokyo marking 70 years of Japan–UN cooperation. UN News
